Abendlied (Rheinberger), Nocturnes (Morten Lauridsen),
Musica Dei donum (Barry Russell),
a selection of folk songs (arr. by Gill Berry),
Easter Hymn (Mascagni)
and the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves ( Verdi).
Something for everyone .
The choir will be singing some of the most gorgeous music known to man or woman. There will be Four Nocturnes by the American composer Morton Lauridsen and sacred and secular works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bruckner and Grieg among others.
The thread that unites the music, some of it sung unaccompanied, is that all the pieces are evocative of heaven or earth. ‘It will be a feast for the heart as well as the ears,’ says Cantata Secretary Judy Vaughan. ‘It’s the perfect way to spend a summer evening as the swallows swoop home to their nests.’ ‘They say that if we’re good, we go up to heaven after we die,’ adds Cantata Chairman Joe Gomme, ‘but what if heaven is already here on earth? If that’s the case, many of us who live in Shropshire may be in heaven already, it’s just that we don’t know it. The music Cantata are performing in Meole Brace on Saturday 16 June could have been written to prove the point. It takes you to heaven whether you like it or not.
